Adrian Duck - Breeding Shed and Flights

Adrian Duck - Intermediate Budgerigar Breeder - Wire cages

The breeding shed is 12ft by 8ft, fully lined for warmth and insulation with two tubular heat bars with frost stat control, fluorescent strip light and dimmer switch bulb lights.

I have a Safari Select extraction unit with fan to keep dust levels down and in summer use an insect light to kill moths etc. The shed has two doors, one which is not used, has a wire panel behind so the door can be opened in summer for more ventilation.

The main entrance is a sliding door built into the side of the shed also an opening window. This faces onto the flight, which runs parallel and is part of the aviary at the rear of the breeding shed, all joined by a passage which prevents birds escaping, This is also lit by fluorescent lighting.
A dimmer light is fitted in the rear aviary and a time controlled light in the flight for more light in the winter. The whole flight is covered by corrugated Perspex. As this is all situated in a sheltered position, most days the sliding doors can be opened so the birds can see and hear each other. I also keep a radio on at low level during the day as I find the more noise they have the livelier and happier they are.
